Watch, learn and do! If you’re a do-it-yourselfer or boat owner interested in learning new techniques for taking care of your boat or motor, head to Fred’s Shed for practical, professional advice. Free daily sessions cover a variety of topics.

  • Watch certified marine technician and expert wrench slinger “Fred” demo tools and techniques on actual boat and motor cutaways.
  • Learn how to maintain, repair or upgrade our boat or motor.
  • Take part in discussions, ask questions and participate in hands-on-clinics.

On-the-water workshops for Power, Sail and Catamaran

Nothing beats hands on experience when it comes to improving your boating skills and learning new ones. This year, let Discover Boating add more fun and excitement to your boat show experience and take your boating skills up a notch. There’s something for everyone - from absolute beginners to seasoned skippers! Learn from experts; all sessions are taught by USCG licensed captains who are professional, certified instructors.

Looking for a new way to enjoy the outdoors and energize your exercise routine? Head to Try It Cove to experience for yourself why paddle sports are among the world’s fastest-growing water sports. 

Get out on the water and try stand-up paddle boarding (SUP), kayaks and other paddle sport activities.Be sure to bring your bathing suit and a towel; we’ll provide the equipment, life jackets, and a changing room. In addition to SUPs, there will be plenty of other on-the-water activities available.

Open to children eight and older with adult supervision.

Grab a bite to eat at the BBQ hosted by the Rotary Club La Mesa, enjoy a glass of craft beer at Anchors & Ales Beer Garden or a snack at one of the gourmet Food Trucks. Relax & listen to live entertainment with Caribbean music by Frankendread.

FREE Sailing Lesson aboard the Sailing Simulator

Test the waters—without leaving dry land!

Experience how a sailboat reacts to wind and waves, and learn how to use the tiller with the help of an ASA certified instructor. Featured at the America's Cuup, the sailing simulator recreates the movement of a boat under sail so you can get a feel for the water, without getting wet. It's a unique and fun training platform for sailors of all abilities and ages.

Family Fun — Nautical Activities

Families and little skippers will love the boat show!

Want the kids to try a water activity? Visit Try It Cove and try free stand-up paddle boarding with professional instructors! Be sure to bring your suit and a towel; we'll provide the equipment and instruction. Open to children eight and older with adult supervision.

Little skippers can try saiing aboard the Sailing Simulator—without getting wet!

Be on the lookout for a special Father's Day Promotion on Sunday, June 19 featuring giveaways throughout the day. Skipper, our mascot, might have a surprise for families. 

Remember— admission is FREE for kids 15 and younger.

Boating Simulator—Take a boating lesson without leaving dry land

Would you like to learn to drive a 20’ center console boat and improve your boating skills with no risk and no worries? You can! The United States Power Squadrons® (USPS) will display their new Boating Skills Virtual Trainer® (BSVT) in Booth L101. This small boat simulator features a steering wheel and real Mercury throttle you can use to take a virtual boat trip on a lake with other sail and power boats, navigation aids, and a full marina for close-quarters maneuvers and docking. Instructors can vary the difficulty by changing wind and current direction, velocity and day/night scenarios. It’s fun, easy way to boost your boating skills.
